Moshman Research is developing a framework for a hypersonic flow control system development tool. The overall approach is to integrate a multi-physics flow model with an automatic differentiation engine and industry-standard optimization tools.

This figure shows an example of the added control space at hypersonic speeds. Electrodes create magnetic fields around the hypersonic vehicle which exert the Lorentz force on the weakly ionized flow. This effect can be used for shock cancellation, added lift and boundary layer control. Characteristic lines are shown in parallel, indicating shock cancellation.

The work has been presented twice to the Air Force’s Hypersonics Research Collaborative. The first of the 50 minute talks is available to watch on YouTube.
